This Falls Church estate posed a unique challenge: a steep, soggy slope that rendered the backyard virtually unusable. Yet, our clients – avid entertainers who regularly host elegant fundraisers and lively social gatherings – envisioned a fully functional outdoor experience that could accommodate up to 100 guests while still feeling intimate when it was just the two of them.
Rossen Landscape was entrusted to bring this vision to life: a sophisticated resort-style retreat, complete with a custom pool and spa, multi-level terraces, fire features, and a fully equipped outdoor kitchen – all while preserving a dedicated turf path for their dog to roam freely.
The result? An immersive outdoor destination that earned the 2024 National Association of Landscape Professionals (NALP) Award of Excellence and has become a showpiece of form, function, and lifestyle design.

The transformation began with a strategic response to topography. With over 21 feet of grade change from one end of the site to the other, we utilized a tiered design, incorporating retaining walls and stepped patios to establish defined yet interconnected zones for relaxation, dining, and entertainment.
At the heart of the project is a stunning heated pool anchored by a sculptural basalt water feature. A spacious baja shelf invites guests to unwind under the sun, while the elevated spa offers panoramic views of the entire garden. The pool is flanked by a linear pergola that provides shade and architectural drama, guiding the eye toward the fully integrated outdoor kitchen – complete with a pizza oven, undercounter refrigeration, and built-in grill.
The once-cramped screened porch was reinvented into a breezy, open-air extension of the home. By incorporating retractable phantom screens and removing obstructive framing, we created uninterrupted indoor-outdoor connectivity between the kitchen, lounge, and garden.
Natural stone, architectural pavers, and native plantings blend seamlessly with the property’s wooded backdrop, softening the structure with organic beauty. Every elevation shift and material selection was made with intention – ensuring usability and visual cohesion.
